The Kidizoom digital camera from VTech is predicted to be one of the hottest selling products in the run up to this Christmas. For this reason I decided to buy my 6 year old son, Sam, one and see what the fuss was all about. You can find out if this is the right present for you to buy by reading my Kidizoom review below.

Kidizoom Review - More than just a digital camera for kids

The first thing to stress here is that the Kidizoom camera is not simply just a camera. It also features the ability to record video too, making it a digital video recorder too. However, the included memory card is only large enough to store around 5 minutes of footage. This can be increased significantly though, by buying a compatible 2GB memory card.

The Kidizoom Digital Camera offers:

  • A superb 640x480 VGA camera
  • Ability to record and playback video footage
  • 3 inbuilt games
  • A photo editor to keep your child amused for hours
  • Take up to 200 photos with an inbuilt 16MB memory card (expandable up to 2GB)
  • 1.8 inch colour LCD screen
  • 2 x Interchangable face plates
  • Cables to connect to your TV and/or PC
  • Strong, almost unbreakable design
  • Includes a flash for indoor photography

In addition to the camera and video recording the Kidizoom digital camera also comes installed with 3 games to help keep your kids quiet and entertained. The games included are Tic-Tac-Toe (or naught's and crosses as you may know it), Matching Pairs, and a Rotation Puzzle. With the included TV cable your child can even connect the camera to your TV to play the games on a big screen.

This means you are getting a mini games console too, making the camera fantastic value for your money as well as a toy that has real longetivity and appeal for your children.

Finally the camera also includes a Photo Editor function. This basically allows your child to have fun with the photos they have taken, adding in fun borders such as a theatre stage or snow scene. There are also a number of distortion effects and different disguises (e.g. a pigs nose!) that can be added to photos for hours of amusement.

A tough, durable design - safe for even the clumsiest of kids!

You might be a little worried about spending so much on an electronic toy that could easily get broken by your child's rough and tumble playtime. Well, my advice is do not worry about that all. The Kidizoom camera is incredibly tough - trust me, Sam has thoroughly tested this whilst playing as the Army photographer with his friends!!

It is made from very strong plastic, with large chunky buttons which are both easy for your child to use and very durable - even if your child is the next Geoff Capes! There is also a wrist strap to help stop the camera from being dropped, however do not worry if it does get dropped, it is built to survive the knocks and bumps.

A quality camera that rivals the camera phones of a couple of years ago

It is a real sign of advancing technology when a fully working digital camera is available for children. Back in my day digital cameras hadn't even been invented and now my child has one!

The good news is that the camera is of a quality that we could only dream of when we were kids. In fact, it is a 640x480 VGA camera - the same sort that was used in early camera phones. It is the equivalent of a 0.3 megapixel camera. There is also a Kidizoom Pro version available for a little more which has an impressive 2 megapixel camera for ultimate quality.

This means your child will be able to take real, quality photos that can be printed and displayed just the same as any other photos you have lying around. Better still, the camera includes a cable for you to connect it to your TV or PC for easy viewing and printing of your childs most treasured photos.

There is even a 1.8 inch colour LCD screen on the camera which displays the photos and the view of any photo your child is about to take. This makes it easier for your child to take the perfect photo - without cutting anyones head off!

Make your child happy this Christmas - Testimonials

So, after buying the Kidizoom camera and doing my Kidizoom review I knew that I liked the camera and that my son did too. However, I wanted to check that is was not just us that liked it. Therefore I arranged a party and invited a few of Sam's friends and their parents round to get some more opinions.

After each child and parent has taken a test spin of the Kidizoom not only did we have some very humorous photos but I also asked the parents for their opinions:

Josh's Dad, Steve

"I think the Kidizoom is brilliant, normally if it is not to do with cars then Josh does not show much interest. However, it has been a struggle to get him to pass it on to another child - I think this will definitely be one of the top requests from Santa this year!"

Kirsty's Mum, Elaine

"I am very impressed with it, especially all of the different features it has and how easy they are for Kirsty to use. I struggle to work our digital camera so I was unsure Kirsty would get the hang of it. However, it is obvious they have put a lot of thought in to that and made it easy for kids to use. It was a joy to see how happy Kirsty was with the camera in her hand, I think we know what she wants to be when she grows up now!"

Bobby's Mum, Rebecca

"To be fair I was a bit nervous about bringing Booby here to play with Sam's toys because he tends to be very rough and often breaks things. However, I am very relieved to see that the camera is made of strong stuff - even Bobby cannot break it! I will be definitely getting him one for Christmas, finally a toy that will not be broken by New Years Day!"

David (Age 6)

"I like it because it is different to my other toys. I can take pictures of my cat and my Daddy can print them off from his computer. I want one from Father Christmas."

Sounds great! - Are there any negatives to the Kidizoom?

Well, of course, no Kidizoom review would be complete without mentioning the negatives. As with most things there are a couple of negatives to consider before you buy.

Firstly, although you can store up to 200 photos or 5 minutes of video footage on the inbuilt 16MB memory card, this can get used up pretty quickly by your click-happy child. You can also lose the photos if the batteries run out and you havent uploaded them to your PC.

Therefore, buying an additional memory card is recommend. The Kidizoom supports up to 2GB memory cards which are available for under £5. A 2GB memory card would increase the capacity of the Kidizoom to hold around 800 photos or 30 minutes video footage.

Despite the camera being called the 'Kidizoom' there are no zoom functions on the camera. Not a big problem but something to be aware of. There is also a slight delaye between pressing the button to take a photo and the photo actually being taken. Again not a problem you just have to make sure your child understands this.

Finally you should be aware that as with all digital camera, batteries are required. The Kidizoom uses 4xAA batteries so make sure you stock up in time for Christmas!

Summary - A perfect choice for your childs Christmas or Birthday

Overall both me and Sam have been very impressed with the camera and it gets a massive thumbs up in my Kidizoom review. It seems we are not alone either, the friends we invited over all loved it and it seems there is a very good reason why it is expected to be a big seller this Christmas.

You see, this isn't a toy that your child will tire of quickly, it is also not a toy that will break after a few uses either. For this reason it is well worth the money. Sure, it may be a bit more expensive than some of the other toys on your childs Christmas list (and probably a lot cheaper than some too!) but you get what you pay for.

The only reason I did not give it the full 5 out of 5 rating was that from an educational point of view it is only average. However, from an entertainment and longetivity point of view there are not many toys that can beat it.

If you want to bring a big smile to your childs face, not just for Christmas but for months, even years to come then the Kidizoon digital camera is the perfect choice for you.
